 given f(x)=-4x+4 find f(a+1)

Replace x on both sides by a+1:

f(a+1)=-4(a+1)+4=-4a-4+4=-4a

Note that when x is replaced by a+1 on the right side, you need to put parentheses around the a+1 to have it work right.
