Ive been trying to solve these for two days now and the answers I'mgetting are not being accepted by the computer, can someone please do them and tell me what they get. Thank you so much. 1.A rectangular page is to contain 180 square inches of print. The top and bottom margins are each 0.5 inches wide , and the margins on each side is 1.5 inches wide. What should the dimensions be if the least amount of material is to be used ? (Leave your answers to 3 decimal places.) 2.Suppose postal requirements are that the maximum of the length plus the girth (cross sectional perimeter) of a rectangular package that may be sent is 275 inches. Find the dimensions of the package with square ends whose volume is to be maximum. (Leave your answers to 3 decimal places. |

We don't do homework here, but let's tackle #1. Let x by the top and bottom of print and let y be the sides of print. then xy=180 to get 180 square inches of print (so, y=180/x). The material used is x+2(.5)=x+1 for the top and bottom and y+2(1.5)=y+3 for the sides. So, the area is: A(x)=(x+1)(y+3) =(x+1)(180/x+3) Multiply out, take the derivative, set it equal to zero, and solve for x, then solve for y: the dimension are x+1 by y+3. ---------------------------------------- Principal Skinner |
