i need step by step help on how to do this for example: y=5/4x-2 y=5/4x-1 ![]() |

You probably mean y=(5/4)x-2 y=(5/4)x-1 Setting y=y and replacing each y by the left and right sides: (5/4)x-2=(5/4)x-1 Subtracting the term (5/4)x from both sides (add -(5/4)x to both sides), since (5/4)x-(5/4)x=0, you get: -2=-1 This is impossible...which means that the two straight lines that these equations represent never meet. So, they must parallel. In fact, the lines each have the slope (5/4) and differ by having the y-intercepts -1 and -2. ---------------------------------------- Principal Skinner |
